Family Meetings 101
Author: Deborah Shelton

Family meetings provide opportunities for feelings to be aired and validated. They also allow younger children to feel they are an important part of the decision-making process when it comes to family vacations and other major and minor family functions.

Before the first meeting commences, set a few ground rules such as:

  • Speak in a calm tone.

  • Avoid name-calling, finger-pointing, and sarcasm.

  • Turn off the TV, radio and telephones.

  • Allow each person to voice his or her concerns and ideas.

  • Listen to all opinions before making a decision.

  • If a person voices a complaint, they must also bring to the table at least one possible remedy to the situation.

Locations for future family meetings may also be brainstormed at the first meeting. Here are a few examples:

  • Circle Time

Very simply, sit on the floor together, in a circle. Designate an object as a "talking token". This can be a small stuffed animal, a necklace to be worn, a hat, or any other item that will be passed around. Whoever holds the talking token may speak. Once they are finished, they must pass the token to the next person.

  • Restaurant Rendezvous

Take turns choosing a favorite restaurant to host your family meetings. For this option, choose an afternoon or evening in the middle of the week, or at off-peak times, to avoid heavy crowds. End the meeting before dessert arrives, so everyone can indulge their sweet tooth happily.

  • Hobby Haven

I know of several families who hold their meetings at places that cater to their favorite hobbies. For instance, one family conducts their meeting at a bowling alley. Once the meeting is over, they enjoy bowling together. Another family combines their gathering with their love of books, by meeting at a café in their favorite bookstore. And yet another family I know holds their weekly meeting after a joyful round of put-put golf. This option combines family communication and fun.

However, and wherever, your family decides to host the meetings, remember this all-important point: Always end each meeting with a hug!

Where to Do It?
Author: Kari White
Let your venue dictate your theme wedding! When planning a theme wedding, one of the best ways to incorporate a theme is by selecting your location.

There are endless locations where you can hold your wedding.

Think outside of the box and try some unusual attractions instead of the traditional community hall or hotel. Here are a few suggestions on selecting your location:

¤ Are you in love with twinkle of the cityscape lights at night? Try holding your wedding in a skyscraper! Many
buildings have corporate rooms that you could rev up for your wedding.

¤ Are you a book worm – did you meet your fiancĂ© at school? What about holding your affair at a library? You are sure to find an "aisle" you can parade down.

¤ Is your idea of a great night out a dinner and a movie? Hold your wedding at a local movie theatre. Try finding an older theatre with some character or a huge theatre like an Imax. Get married right on stage!

¤ Do you have a love of golf or bowling? Get married right on the premises! Walk down the first tee or down the bowling lane into your loved ones arms.

¤ Is there a historic building in your area? Check out your local listings for buildings or restaurants with some
"haunting" effect.

¤ Love the thought of travel; jetting off into the sky. See if you can hold your wedding in a local airplane hanger.

¤ Other places to consider are: Beaches, Gardens, Plantations,
Vineyards, Parks or Zoos!

Anything can work just use your imagination and go for it!

What Bowling and Success Have In Common
Author: Mike Litman

I was flying home from a seminar in Atlanta yesterday afternoon on Delta and they have TVs on each seat.

It was 1pm and I was a bit tired, so I was channel surfing and wouldn't have minded if I just fell asleep for the trip.

But as I was surfing, I came across ESPN, the sports network, and they were having the finals of a bowling tournament.

I'm not a huge bowling fan, I do try to 'hit the lanes' once or twice a year, but I caught the end of an interview with one of the bowlers and it got my attention.

Here's why.

He was talking about how important staying focused and having a positive attitude is, but then he said something that I know to be so helpful.

I call them, S.R.P.'s.

S.R.P. stands for 'Success Reference Points.'

Here's what he said:

He said that he thinks about a time in the past when he was bowling and 'on fire', and he was doing great.

He puts himself back in that mindset.

What was he saying to himself?

How was he standing, how was his posture?

He even watched old bowling videos of him doing great.

We all have moments in our past that we can REMEMBER and use in the PRESENT.

In Arnold Schwarzenegger's biography, he talks about using this same principle to quickly help him succeed.

Ask yourself:

When was there a time in my life when I was doing GREAT, when I felt UNSTOPPABLE? What were my habits, what was my self-talk, how was I feeling? Then TAKE THAT mindset into the present....

Feel strong.

Feel powerful.

Be on top of your game.

This bowler I was watching, with the help of this strategy, won his first ever major bowling tournament and $100,000.

At any moment, we can choose to be strong or weak, we can c hoose to remember a negative moment or a positive one.

YOU are in charge.

You should listen in to the 'Ultimate Lifestyle Workshop' because I show you how to build a strong and profitable internet or information business from home.

Stretch yourself and allow yourself to be uncomfortable before you're comfortable.

Your growth is all about going from awkward to natural.

Jim Tucker e-mailed me Saturday and told me how my "Power of Concentration Success System' helped him go from awkward to natural and conquer his fears.

You DESERVE to have an amazing next 48 hours.

Let's start it right now.

Move into ACTION, that's where the MAGIC happens!

Put yourself in a positive and strong mindset BECAUSE

great things will happen.

I believe in you.

Talk to you soon.

Preparing The Perfect Birthday - How To Make Planning Quick And Easy
Author: News Canada
(NC)-Birthdays rank as the most important date of the year for many young children. Besides the cake and the presents, it's a day when families communicate that a child is special and loved.

For a parent, this can mean a whole lot of pressure and money. Statistics Canada hasn't yet studied the birthday party economy, but with 5.5 million kids 13 and under…that can add up to some serious dollars and serious stress in planning.

Across Canada, time-starved parents may find it extremely difficult to fit birthday party planning into their busy lives, especially when they want it to be a memorable party for their child. But there are quick and easy ways to plan parties that will leave parents with the energy to actually enjoy the party, and more importantly, won't have them dreading next year's bash.

The most important thing to remember is that you don't need ponies and jugglers to create memories for your child. Instead, focus on simple ideas and take advantage of your child's active imagination by letting them help with theme and activity ideas.

According to www.sunsationalkids.com , theme parties are wonderful because they set the stage for the gifts, activities and party favours, and best of all, they take much of the guess work out of the most important step of a party…proper planning. Other tips include:

  • Think about how old your child is turning because each age has different interests

  • Grab a notebook and sit down with your child (if they are over the infant/toddler age) and discuss with them what type of party they have in mind.

  • Create a list of people to invite (four to six children for ages one to three, ten to twelve children for ages four to 12).

The absolute easiest way to throw a birthday party for your child is to do it at a venue that will either plan the party for you or at least include all the required elements. For example, little girls who love Barbie are all going to want a Barbie Birthday Popcorn Party for their next birthday. Available at Famous Players theatres across the country, the Barbie Birthday Popcorn Party is a full birthday package with a Barbie twist. The birthday girl receives Barbie-themed invitations to send out to her friends, and the large party includes Barbie decorations, Barbie loot bags, and a personalized Barbie cake.

"We've worked with Famous Players to create three totally Barbie-themed birthday packages that no Barbie fan can resist," says Erica Van Kamp, Marketing Manager, Girls Brands, Mattel Canada Inc. "These parties are not only great for the girls, but also for the parents - a Popcorn Party coordinator does all the planning for you, and is even on hand to help out during the party. For more information call 1-888-3-FAMOUS."

Other venues also offer inexpensive birthday party packages. Check out your local zoo, favourite family restaurant, bowling alley, community pool, or skating rink.

If you are going to plan the party at home, it still doesn't have to be a stressful task. Just get creative and use the internet for some great theme ideas like Hot Wheels, princess, Barney, and Blue's Clues.

Whether you choose to have a party at home or at a venue such as Famous Players, just remember that the best part of any birthday party is that you are creating memories for your birthday girl or boy that will last a lifetime. Don't forget your camera!
